Microsoft Introduces Copilot+ PCs: The Future of AI-Enhanced Computing

Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft, announced yesterday that Microsoft has unveiled a new category of Windows PCs designed for artificial intelligence at a special event on its new campus. Named Copilot+ PCs, these devices promise to be the fastest and most intelligent Windows PCs ever built, boasting powerful new silicon capable of over 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), all-day battery life, and access to advanced AI models.

Unmatched Performance and Efficiency

Copilot+ PCs integrate a new high-performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU) alongside the CPU and GPU, creating a system architecture that offers unprecedented AI acceleration. These devices can perform up to 20 times more powerful and up to 100 times more efficient in running AI workloads compared to previous generations. In performance tests, Copilot+ PCs outperformed Apple’s MacBook Air 15” by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance while offering up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge.

Innovative AI Experiences

Microsoft has reimagined the entire PC, from silicon to the operating system and applications, with AI at the center. Copilot+ PCs come with several innovative AI-driven features:

  • Recall: This feature helps users quickly find information they have seen or used on their PC by organizing data based on relationships and associations unique to individual experiences. It acts like a photographic memory for your PC, enabling intuitive searches across applications, websites, and documents.
  • Cocreator: Integrated into Windows, this feature allows users to generate and refine AI images in near real-time using a combination of ink strokes and text prompts. The AI helps to iterate and evolve the artwork, providing a range of creative outputs.
  • Live Captions: Copilot+ PCs can translate audio from over 40 languages into English captions in real-time, even offline. This feature enhances accessibility and ensures effective communication across languages.

Partnering with Top OEMs

Copilot+ PCs will be available from Microsoft Surface and OEM partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Pre-orders start today, with availability beginning on June 18. Prices for these advanced PCs start at $999, offering significant value compared to similar devices on the market.

Enhanced Security and Privacy

Every Copilot+ PC comes with the Microsoft Pluton Security processor enabled by default and several new security features in Windows 11. These include personalized privacy controls, ensuring users’ data and experiences remain secure.

Applications and Software Optimization

Microsoft has optimized its software ecosystem for these new devices, offering native Arm64 experiences for Microsoft 365 apps like Teams, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as third-party applications like Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, and more. The powerful new emulator, Prism, ensures smooth performance for both native and emulated apps.

Expanding AI Innovation

The introduction of Copilot+ PCs marks a significant milestone in AI innovation on personal devices. By combining the power of cloud-based large language models (LLMs) with locally running small language models (SLMs), Microsoft aims to deliver rich AI experiences that enhance productivity, creativity, and communication.

With Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft is setting the stage for the next decade of Windows innovation, blending cutting-edge AI capabilities with powerful, efficient hardware to create the ultimate computing experience.
